"Winter in Vermont" Vermont Studio Center Johnson Vermont 2005
In Winter 2005 Stephen Copland was resident artist at the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont USA. The Center is the largest residency program in America accommodating 60 artists from around the world.
This exhibition explores the beauty and impact of the North American winter season, as well as its dangers. During the residency the solitude of artmaking was interrupted by a near fatal car accident in the last week of the residency.
Of the incident fellow resident and American writer, historian Dr. Kevin Dann poignantly wrote: "Physical winter in Vermont's native Wonbanakiak people who weathered its challenges for thousands of winters, called it "the killing time" has brought with icy intensity the Judas kiss of betrayal that all that comforting whiteness and silence hides."
